Renato Augusto follows Mano’s plan, plays more frequently, and has an unprecedented streak this year

Renato Augusto is going through a new phase with Mano Menezes at Corinthians. In a season marked by careful physical conditions, he plays the tenth match in a row this Sunday, against Santos, at the Neo Química Arena, for the 30th round of the Brasileirão.

It’s a first for this season and double the longest streak the midfielder has ever had (five games). The current series follows the planning of Mano, who arrived at Corinthians promising Renato Augusto on the field more often.

– A great player, differentiated, has to play as many times as possible. Otherwise, the team senses when he’s not. We’re going to manage (Renato), maybe save him during the games so he doesn’t miss out on others – said the coach in the presentation interview.

It’s been just like that. Renato is one of four Corinthians players who have been on the field in the six games with Mano – Cássio, Gil and Giuliano are the others. Only one match was completed, against Fortaleza in the Sudamericana, even so the midfielder is the sixth in the squad with the most minutes on the field (406 minutes, average of 67 per game).

Prior to the current streak, Renato Augusto had three five-game series. There were two in Paulistão and one more in June when he suffered a muscle injury after forcing recovery from a knee injury. From this episode on, the midfielder was spared from five matches and became the subject of a dispute between Luxembourg and physiotherapist Bruno Mazziotti.

In all, Renato Augusto played 37 games this season and was absent in another 27, due to injury or being spared. The last discomfort he felt was in the game against Flamengo, in which he left at halftime, but recovered following a specific training schedule during the Fifa Date.

“When we arrived here the other time, Renato was in a similar situation, he had finished the (2013) season with few games. And in the following two seasons, it was very participatory and important, as it is now. Let’s think about it for him and for everyone. We need more people to take responsibility,” Mano said when he arrived.

The number 8 should start for Corinthians in the classic against Santos, at 18:30 pm this Sunday. The game at Neo Química Arena is valid for the 30th round and is a direct confrontation in the fight against relegation in the Brasileirão.
