Lavrense player “in critical condition” after being stabbed at nightclub

The episode took place in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday, in Porto.

João Freire, a 20-year-old player who plays for Lavrense, a team belonging to the Porto Football Association, was stabbed outside a nightclub, located in the city of Porto, in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday.

The news was given by a family member of the striker himself, via social media, according to Jornal de Notícias, and has since been confirmed, both by the current club and by Varzim, where he played at youth level.

“In the early hours of today, after a trip to Via Rápida with friends, [João] was surprised by a despicable being who put his life on hold. There were two stab wounds that took down a young man with everything he needed to succeed”, said an aunt of the athlete.

“João Freire, former Varzim SC athlete, is hospitalized in a critical condition. At this very delicate moment, Varzim Sport Club leaves a message of strength to João and also to his family”, wrote the former club by João Freire.
