Five fans detained before the Lisbon derby between Sporting and Benfica

Five fans were arrested on Sunday before the opening whistle of the Lisbon derby between Sporting and Benfica, which ended in a 2-2 draw, counting for the 33rd and penultimate round of the Portuguese Football League.

According to a police source explained to Lusa, one of the fans was arrested for possession of a prohibited weapon, two for resistance and coercion, one for harming the physical integrity of an agent of the authority and one for disobeying the ban on access to sports venues, with all arrests to occur even before the start of the meeting.

In addition to these, two fans were also identified due to the possession and use of pyrotechnic devices, with policing being carried out “as planned”, with several small incidents promptly resolved with quick police intervention.

Sporting and Benfica drew 2-2 in the Lisbon derby of the 33rd and penultimate round of the I Portuguese Football League, a result that prevented the ‘reds’ from celebrating this Sunday the conquest of the 38th national title, which has eluded them since 2018/19 season.
