Paul Offor Set to Take Over as Akwa United Head Coach Ahead of 2025/26 NNL Season
Former Sporting Lagos boss Paul Offor is close to being named the new head coach of Akwa United ahead of the 2025/26 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.
The deal has not yet been made official, but reports say only paperwork remains before it is confirmed.
Offor, who last worked with Grassrunners FC, recently announced his exit from the club on social media, thanking them for the opportunity.
His expected arrival comes at a crucial time for Akwa United, who were relegated after a poor 2024/25 season. The “Promise Keepers” are now aiming for a fresh start after years of instability and frequent coaching changes.
Offor almost joined Kano Pillars after leaving Sporting Lagos, but the move collapsed before last season began.
Akwa United had a disappointing campaign in 2024/25—playing 38 games with only 12 wins, 8 draws, and 18 defeats.
The club’s struggles have been linked to constant managerial changes. After title-winning coach Kennedy Boboye left in 2021, Deji Ayeni, Fatai Osho, and Mohammed Babaganaru all failed to deliver consistent results. Even Boboye’s return late last season couldn’t save the team from relegation.
Off the pitch, big changes are happening too. Former chairman Elder Paul Bassey, who led the team to their 2021 league title and two Federation Cups, is now Akwa Ibom’s Commissioner for Sports. He has since dissolved the boards of all state-owned clubs, leaving Akwa United under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Sports.
If confirmed, Paul Offor’s appointment will signal a new beginning for Akwa United as they look to bounce back to the NPFL and restore their pride both on and off the field.
