FC St. Pauli Leaves X Amid Concerns Over Platform’s Direction
German Bundesliga club FC St. Pauli has announced its decision to leave X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, citing concerns over Elon Musk’s leadership and its potential influence on the upcoming German elections. The club released a detailed statement explaining its stance and urging followers to transition to BlueSky.
St. Pauli’s Concerns with X Under Elon Musk
FC St. Pauli strongly criticized the platform for becoming a space where harmful content thrives. In their official statement, the club highlighted several key issues:
Unchecked Hate Speech: St. Pauli claimed that X has become a “hate machine” under Musk’s ownership, allowing racism, conspiracy theories, and threats to flourish without consequences.
Political Interference: The club expressed apprehension about Musk’s alleged political affiliations, particularly his connection to Donald Trump, who recently won the US election. St. Pauli believes Musk’s role in Trump’s administration could lead to X being used to manipulate discourse during the German elections.
A Historical Goodbye
St. Pauli acknowledged its history on the platform, where it amassed 250,000 followers since joining in 2013. However, the club emphasized that leaving X aligns with its values of promoting inclusivity and combating hate speech.
“The account will no longer be used, but the content of the last 11 years will remain online in view of its contemporary historical value,” the statement read.
Transition to BlueSky
In response to these concerns, FC St. Pauli is encouraging its followers to join them on BlueSky, a platform the club views as more aligned with its principles. Both its main and English accounts will transition to BlueSky, maintaining their connection with fans through a platform they consider safer and more ethical.
FC St. Pauli’s decision to leave X is a bold move that reflects its commitment to standing against hate speech and political manipulation. The club’s actions highlight the growing concerns among organizations about the direction of social media under Elon Musk’s leadership. By transitioning to BlueSky, St. Pauli sets an example of aligning digital presence with core values, urging others to consider similar steps.
